Refsnyder hits 2-run homer as Red Sox defeats Tigers 6-2 – Boston news, weather, sports

BOSTON (AP) — Rob Refsnyder hit a two-run homer in the third inning, and the Boston Red Sox earned their third straight win of the season, beating the Detroit Tigers 6-2 on Wednesday night.

Jarren Duran and Alex Verdugo each added a two-run double as Boston won for the eighth time in 10 games. Michael Wacha (6-1) pitched six innings and allowed two runs and five hits with seven strikeouts to help the Red Sox improve to a season-high eight-game over .500.

Javier Báez hit a homer in two carries for the Tigers, who lost nine of 11.

Tarik Skubal (5-5) lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He has lost his last three starts.

Báez put the Tigers ahead in the first round and drove Wacha’s fastball from the first pitch into the seats over the Green Monster for his sixth home run of the season. It extended his hitting streak to seven games, one night after finishing a double down on the cycle.

Báez has three homers in his last five games after hitting just one in his last 45 games.

The lead lasted until the third time, when Duran leveled the game and ripped a line drive into the left corner that hit Christian Vázquez and Bobby Dalbec.

Refsnyder was next, recovering from a 0-2 count to lift a flyball to left center that caught the monster’s lip. It was originally scored as a double, but after a brief review by the umpires it was scored as a homer.

The drive was Refsnyder’s first homer for Boston since signing as a free agent in December.

Detroit had runners on the corners with no outs in the sixth, but Wacha escaped by beating Harold Castro and Robbie Grossman before Spencer Torkelson went in the middle.

TRAINING ROOM

Red Sox: Manager Alex Cora said Duran will not be traveling with the team to their three-game streak in Toronto next week because he is not vaccinated against COVID-19 and is barred from entering the country under Canadian rules.

NEXT

Tigers: RHP Rony Garcia (1-2, 4.97 ERA) will be looking for his second straight win when he opens Detroit’s three-game series on Friday in Arizona.

Red Sox: RHP Nick Pivetta (7-5, 3.31) is on the mound as Boston begins a three-game streak in Cleveland on Friday.
