BOSTON (AP) — Bobby Dalbec hit a two-run homer, one of the top five longballs of the Boston season, and the Red Sox drove to a 12-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
Rafael Devers, Kiké Hernández, Franchy Cordero and Christian Arroyo each scored a solo drive for the Red Sox, who recorded their ninth win in 12 games.
All of Boston’s five home runs came in four innings against Bruce Zimmermann (2-3). He allowed a career-high four homers in his last start Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.
Chants of “Let’s go, Celtics!” echoed through Fenway Park a few times, growing louder as Boston scored five goals in game eight. Hours later, the Celtics played the Miami Heat in Game 7 of the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
Xander Bogaerts had three hits, including a two-run double. Cordero added a two-run double and Arroyo hit on the first pitch after having to get a new racquet.
Jake Pivetta (4-4) gave up a run in five hits in six innings and improved to 4-0 in his last five starts with a 1.59 ERA.
Zimmermann allowed six runs and eight hits.
Trey Mancini had three goals for the Orioles, who lost four of six.
Dalbec started the homer barrage in the second with his drive into the last row of Green Monster seats. A batsman later, Cordero hit his on the stands in midfield, making it 3-0.
Devers’ drive cleared in Boston’s third bullpen before Arroyo and Hernández hit theirs over the monster in the following inning.
Arroyo’s shot left Fenway completely to make it 5-0. His old racquet splintered and cut down the middle from top to bottom, the piece flying halfway to the mound as he fouled a pitch, forcing him to get another racquet.
Hernández’s homer bounced off a billboard over the left field wall.
Orioles: Anthony Santander appeared to injure himself slightly when he came up short on his grounder just about halfway to first, but stayed in the game after a visit from coach and manager Brandon Hyde.
Red Sox: Manager Alex Cora said LHP Chris Sale, who has been sidelined since early April with a broken right rib, would throw three times this week at the club’s spring training complex in Fort Myers, Fla. The manager also said RHP Hansel Robles, who was put on the injured list on Saturday with back spasms, may also travel to Florida if the team embarks on a trip to the West Coast later this week.
Cordero’s was estimated at 448 feet and Devers – with an exit speed of 110.7 mph – was 434.
Baltimore RHP Cody Sedlock made his major league debut, working three innings and giving up five runs. The 26-year-old beat Trevor Story with his swinging for his first Big League K.
RHP Tyler Wells (1-4, 4.30 ERA) is scheduled to start for Baltimore in the finals of the five-game series Monday night. Veteran LHP Rich Hill (1-3, 3.86) is seeded for Boston. Hill’s allowed four runs or fewer in its last 79 starts, dating back to May 2018, the longest active streak in the majors.
