Red Sox add Refsynder, put Whitlock on 10-day injured list – Boston News, Weather, Sports

SEATTLE (AP) — The Boston Red Sox selected Triple-A Worcester outfielder Rob Refsynder on Friday and let him lead and play at right field in the series opener against Seattle.

Boston also put starting pitcher Garrett Whitlock on the 10-day injured list retroactively to June 9 because of a right hip infection.

This will be Refsynder’s second stint with the Red Sox this season, appearing in three games in April. Refsynder played 51 games for Minnesota last season. Manager Alex Cora said he expects Refsynder to stay with the Red Sox for more than just a few days.

Boston is set to use infielder Jonathan Araúz to clear a spot in the 40-man roster for Refsynder.

Before the game, Cora sounded unsure if Whitlock would make his planned start in Sunday’s series finals against the Mariners. Whitlock threw four innings and conceded four runs with six hits in his last start Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels.

Whitlock is 2-1 with a 3.51 ERA in 13 games from nine starts. Boston recalled Worcester right-hander Phillips Valdez to take Whitlock’s place.

Cora said Nathan Eovaldi has returned to Boston to have his hip issue checked out but should be able to make his next round in the rotation next week.

Cora added that leftist Chris Sale is expected to face live hitters in Florida on Monday and if all goes well he could join the team in Boston next week to continue his rehab after suffering a stress fracture to his right rib.
