Thibaut Courtois has issued a warning Liverpool ahead of Champions League final by insisting ‘If Real Madrid play a final, they win it’
La Liga champions Real Madrid will look to clinch a record-breaking 14th Champions League title against Premier League side Liverpool on Saturday night.
Since the European Cup became the Champions League in 1992, Real Madrid have won all seven finals they have contested, beating Liverpool 3-1 in the flagship event in 2018.
Courtois is aiming for his maiden Champions League win in Paris tomorrow night after finishing on the losing side in the 2014 final when Atletico Madrid were beaten by Real Madrid.
At the press conference ahead of the final, Courtois said: “They already played a final against Madrid in 2018. For me it was different.
“Real Madrid, if they play a final, they win it and now I’m on the right side of history.”
Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid made comebacks against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City to reach this season’s Champions League final.
The Spanish giants appeared to be on the way in stages in their previous three wins and Ancelotti believes the club’s history in Europe helped propel them into an unlikely final.
“We deserve to go to the final first because of quality: if you don’t have individual quality, you won’t go to the final, but quality and talent are not enough,” said Ancelotti.
“You have to bring it together, the quality of everyone together makes the team commit and we had that.
“Then the history of this club pushed us in difficult moments, we deserve to get to the final but we have to earn it tomorrow, there is no other way.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, has suggested Real Madrid should be considered favorites to win the Champions League.
“I don’t know – I don’t have an easy answer. If you look at the history of the clubs and the way Real Madrid celebrate those comebacks, based on experience I would say they are,” said the German coach.
“I want us to be on the same level in things like that. I want us to be ourselves in this game – when we’re at our best we’re difficult to play.
“My main concern is for us to be ourselves and be confident – I don’t know who the favorite is and I don’t care either.”
