Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said Kylian Mbappe “doesn’t exist” after his side’s win over Liverpool in the Champions League on Saturday night.
Madrid lifted their 14th Champions League trophy after Vinicius Junior’s second-half goal sealed a 1-0 win over Liverpool at the Stade de France.
The Spanish club also ended the season with their 35th LaLiga title after trailing Barcelona by 13 points.
Madrid had made Mbappe’s signing their top priority ahead of the summer transfer window but after signing a deal to join the Spanish club, the France international made a last-minute U-turn and signed a contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain.
When asked about Mbappe’s decision after the final, Perez dismissed the 23-year-old’s decision to snub Madrid.
“We try to get someone every year, but this attacking line is difficult to improve,” Perez told Movistar after the final.
When asked if Mbappe would have been an improvement, Perez replied: “Today Mbappe doesn’t exist, Real Madrid exists.
“It’s a party for Real Madrid and their players who have been European champions.”
Meanwhile, former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard admits he was surprised by Mbappe’s decision to stay at PSG.
“He definitely thinks he’s a little bit richer for sure,” Gerrard told BT Sport.
“But from a football decision I think in his quiet moment tonight when he’s seen that game he’ll be like, ‘I just turned down the chance to join a club that has won 14 European cups’ and they’ll come back, because they recruit top players.
“They have the know-how, they have the demand to win it, they’re going to win more.
“They have the appeal, don’t they, they have the appeal worldwide, they’re a giant in the game. You have the appeal in terms of recruitment, if a club like Real Madrid come for you, you go 99 times out of 100.
