former Manchester City star Trevor Sinclair has warned Raheem Sterling not to join Chelsea this summer as he doesn’t think Thomas Tuchel’s side will be in contention for the Premier League title next season.

Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly is keen to make England striker Sterling his first major signing, with the Blues currently in talks about a deal with Man City.

Sterling has been a mainstay of City’s side for the past seven seasons, scoring more than 100 goals to help the Manchester club win four Premier League titles since joining from Liverpool in 2015.

But Sterling’s future is in doubt as he enters the final 12 months of his contract with several European clubs also keen to secure his signature.

Chelsea are believed to be at the front of the queue but former England winger Sinclair, who spent four years at Manchester City, doesn’t think it would be a good move for Sterling.

“I would say no because I don’t think Chelsea will be competitive with Man City and Liverpool next season,” he told talkSPORT.

“They lost players, the club is in a transition phase where they lost a lot of players and have to rebuild a lot.

“You have a new man at the helm [Boehly] to do that. I think there’s a hell of a lot of work to do for Chelsea this summer.

“Listen, Raheem is a top-notch player and operator and Chelsea could match next season, but the new owner has a big job ahead of them.”

Chelsea were expected to challenge Man City and Liverpool for the title last season but ended up well behind their domestic rivals in third place.

A move to Stamford Bridge could appeal to Sterling as he grew up in London and could give Tuchel a more important role than Pep Guardiola.

The 27-year-old was on the bench in last season’s Champions League semi-final defeat by Real Madrid and the epic final by Aston Villa.

Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend disagrees with Sinclair and has advised Sterling to move to west London ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.

“I don’t think it would be bad for Raheem right now if he had a change,” he said recently. “I don’t think moving to a club like Chelsea is a bad thing for him.

“Coming and playing for a London club is always an added bonus, living in London and being close to London is obviously what top players would prefer.

“He showed at City that he can play at the top. If Chelsea can do that for £40m they should bite City’s hand off.
