Rafael Nadal has confirmed that he wants to play at Wimbledon this year.

The Spaniard has not played at the All England Club since 2019 and his participation in the upcoming event was in doubt due to a foot injury.

Following his French Open win earlier this month, the 36-year-old had hinted he could be forced into retirement after revealing he was receiving injections ahead of matches.

However, in a press conference on Friday, Nadal suggested he will compete at Wimbledon after securing the first two Majors of the season and is on the trail of a calendar slam.

He said: “My intention is to play Wimbledon. I’ve trained well this week and my departure for London on Monday reflects that.

“But my foot situation has to be checked day by day, so at the moment I don’t have that certainty of being able to play. All I know is that I want to play the tournament, but we also have to be careful.”

Although successful on grass early in his career, Nadal has struggled on the surface in recent years, most recently reaching the All England Club final in 2011.

He last played at Wimbledon three years ago when he was eliminated by Roger Federer in the semifinals.

Federer will miss Wimbledon this year through injury but Novak Djokovic, who has won the last three men’s titles in SW19, will likely be Nadal’s biggest obstacle on the way to victory.

Nadal’s triumph in Paris earlier this month earned him 22 Grand Slams, two ahead of rivals Djokovic and Federer in the race for most Majors.

The Mallorquin native added: “In the first few days I had complicated feelings, day by day I got better. One more week of training in London and I’m hoping to play Wimbledon and be competitive at it.
