Salem is a magical place. But nestled within the city’s spooky culture, seaside appeal and tenacity for commercial tourism is an eclectic community of people, places and scenes, all functioning as an underground but visible subculture and a vibrant ecosystem for worn and weathered New England lives. radio compass Raise a glass to all of this and more in her latest single and video, a dream punk and garage pop ripper with an enchanting tune called “Salem Romantics.” It is the first track from the upcoming Salem Band album Alohawill be released on May 20th via Sound Investment Records and Gunner Records.
“‘Salem Romantics’ is a song about being in the moment, letting the day take you wherever you want, just being in love with this space and really being in it,” says Radio Compass’ singer, guitarist and ringleader Angela Lee. “This song is about a collection of moments I’ve spent with people I adore, galloping through Salem, absorbing the sunlight, letting the day move me, leaning into ‘another’ for a drink or an appetizer or me turning around, just being carefree, not worrying about tomorrow or what’s to come – but also the awareness that you are in one of those moments.
Lee adds, “It’s the coolest feeling. It’s a song that helps balance out the heavier parts of the record. We all know Monday will come, so don’t worry that, enjoy the day you are in because that is literally all we ever really have. In this case, a Sunday Funday.”
Whether it’s shopping at Die With Your Boots On or Residency Records, shows at Opus and Koto, or cocktails at All Souls Lounge, in addition to all the other places the city puts out a pamphlet for wide-eyed or non-locals alike, Salem is different than any other major city in Massachusetts. And Radio Compass wears it with pride; not just in October, but all year round.
“The video tries to capture a little bit of that,” says Lee. “The red line follows continuously – the Heritage Trail. I’m in love with my city; it’s the perfect little big city. His story has a lot of tragedy and a lot of magic.”
Radio Compass bring their own rock ‘n’ roll magic to Montreal for a performance at Pouzza Fest on May 20th and then party Aloha with his album release party on May 27th at Opus Underground. Catch them all over Salem once in a while and forever after.
