On Monday, Representative Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) Made a great announcement. The 19-year veteran of Congress is stepping down to run former President Donald Trump’s media startup, Truth Social.
Nunes will leave his position at the end of the year.
In one declareNunes said he has been “given a new opportunity to fight for the most important issues that I believe in”.
“Rest assured, by all means, I have not given up on our collective war — I will only pursue it through other means,” he concluded.
Truth Social will launch next year. It has been mired in controversy and confusion. Just hours after Trump announced the upcoming launch in October, it fall under the weight of troll accounts and memes of a pig defecating on its testicles.
On December 1, Truth Social missed self-set deadlines to launch the site’s public beta.
The platform is also facing a more serious threat. On Monday, it was reported that federal regulators were investigating Truth Social’s plans to merge with Digital World Acquisition Corp. (DWAC). In a filing, the DWAC said that it received inquiries from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).
DWAC is a type of shell company known as a SPAC (special purpose acquisition company). It did not reveal the thrust of the investigation, NPR Report.
Nunes’ term will not expire until 2023. His decision to step down a year early has caused some speculation, especially as he assumes the position of chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee. force in the event that Republicans take the House of Representatives midterm.
QAnon conspiracy theorists speculate that the move has something to do with Trump’s release of “DECLAS” or declassified documents. Nunes has close ties to Trump’s defense against the Congressional investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
There is no reason to believe this is true.
Nunes’ decision to step down is likely based at least in part on a new map of California’s congressional district. NS Fresno bee reports that under the proposed map, Nunes faces a much tougher re-election path than in previous years. Even in the Republican-leaning area, in recent years he has spent increasingly large amounts on campaigns and won by narrower margins.
So maybe he’s just actively switching careers.
Many people reacted to this news with interest. “You mean the same company the Feds are investigating?” tweeted @DavidKellyTN, referring to Truth Social.
“Devin Nunes has long been an embarrassment to California,” California Democrat tweeted. “It is fitting that he leaves Congress to further express himself towards Donald Trump.”
Some wondered if he was qualified for the job. “Who knew Nunes had the expertise to run a multi-billion dollar media [company], ” tweeted @WendySiegelman.
While it’s true that he has no background in technology, this isn’t Nunes’ first foray into media. In 2018, he run for a short time His own personal conservative news website.
A special election will be held next year for Nunes’ vacant seat.
