It begins to murmur some dissatisfaction Manchester United reportedly affected director of football John Murtough after what has been a disappointing window so far.

Last season, interim boss Ralf Rangnick claimed the Red Devils may need as many as 10 signings this summer to offset a raft of high-profile departures and replenish the squad.

However, United have only brought on three new faces as part of Erik ten Hag’s rebuild: left-back Tyrell Malacia, defender Lisandro Martinez and free agent Christian Eriksen.

Neither of those positions would have been seen as a major weakness over the summer, while worrisome positions – such as midfielders, right wingers, forwards and right-backs – have not been addressed.

United had hoped to secure an ambitious move for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong but the Dutchman doesn’t want to leave Camp Nou, meaning the Red Devils have now turned their attention to Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot instead.

Their hopes for winger Antony were torpedoed by Ajax’s enormous asking price, while their battle for cover and competition at the top saw them briefly consider a move for 33-year-old Bologna frontman Marko Arnautovic.

United’s approach to the transfer market is looking increasingly chaotic as the deadline approaches, leading to questions being asked of Murtough, according to The Telegraph.

After initially serving as head of club development at United, Murtough was promoted to football director – essentially sporting director – and tasked with overseeing the club’s recruitment and transfer strategy.

But such a disorganized and directionless window has reportedly led to “murmurs” that he’s not up to the role.

Rangnick is believed to have been shocked upon arrival at the club by United’s recruitment team and approach to scouting, and was particularly amazed to find the club had had no reports of RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku – one of the most promising – had compiled exciting players in Europe.

There are also concerns, according to The Telegraph’s report, that Murtough has ceded too much control to Ten Hag, with the Dutch coach having a big say in goals.

That’s why he’s relied heavily on players he already knows: he met Malacia when the full-back was at Feyenoord, Martinez played under him at Ajax and Eriksen is another Amsterdam Academy graduate and returned to the club as Ten Hag Lade was still there last year as he built fitness.

Likewise, he tried to sign his old Ajax charges Jurrien Timber and Antony, while De Jong also played under his compatriot before leaving for Barcelona and even Arnautovic was a player he knew from his time as FC Twente coach.

United legend Gary Neville has previously questioned his old club’s approach this summer, telling Sky Sports: “You have to worry about every element of recruitment. Their faith in the Dutch league means the manager doesn’t trust the recruitment of the 50 or 60 people who work in that department because he wants the players he knows from Holland.

“Holland hasn’t always been the most accurate market for the Premier League. There were good players from Holland but it’s not the best hitting market so I’m worried.

“But in general there is a bit of desperation that the manager – who is an excellent manager – did not start the season with the tools he needs to start with a new, revitalized squad.”
