Quentin Tarantino makes The Movie Critic his last film

Quentin Tarantino famously swore he would only direct 10 films. He even seems willing to stick with the idea. But what will it be? Will it be his long threatened kill Bill Three? His also long threatened film by the Vega brothers? Maybe he would actually get his R rating star trek romp off the ground. But now sources say he’s settled on his swan song, and it might not be what you think.
acc The Hollywood Reporterthe storied but underperforming filmmaker is hard at work on a film called The Film Critic. Details are predictably few and far between, but it’s believed to be “set in late 1970s Los Angeles, with a female lead at its heart”.
Tarantino loves to play with the story, even rewrite it, so it might at least be inspired by a real film critic from that era. THR speculates that it could be one of the most famous critics of all time, Pauline Kael, a very opinionated and argumentative writer who did not write any reviews. In the late 1970’s she was sidelined from her job and briefly became a consultant for Paramount. Or maybe it’s about another film critic of that era like Molly Haskell, Judith Crist or Renata Adler.
It’s still in its infancy, and Tarantino doesn’t even have a home studio for the project yet. When/if it happens, it will be his sequel to the big screen Once upon a time in Hollywoodwhich was also set around the same time and bucked today’s franchise trend by becoming a semi-surprise smash hit.
It’s no big surprise that Tarantino wants to make a film about a film critic. He was released last year cinema speculation, a book of real (and often wacky) film criticism, mostly about 70’s cinema. Maybe it was just research for the film, which he swears will be his last. It’s also worth noting that few directors address projects they make like Tarantino.
