Queensland leads truth-finding and healing investigations on road to treaty

The panel will lead local truth-seeking initiatives to promote “a shared understanding” of history in institutions such as public libraries, museums, archives and art galleries.

Palaszczuk will sign a declaration of commitment with First Nations leaders in Parliament on Tuesday.

Queensland could become the fourth jurisdiction to sign a treaty with indigenous peoples. Victoria and ACT have already done so, while the Northern Territory is at an advanced stage in its own treaty process.

South Australia’s Labor government had been working towards a deal, but the process was halted in 2018 with the election of a new Liberal leadership.

NSW, Western Australia and Tasmania are not working on a treaty deal.

The Albanian federal government intends to hold a referendum on a constitutional First Nations vote in parliament in its first term.

The Greens are pushing for a truth-telling commission to back Labour’s plans, but the Government says their priority is getting the vote.
