Quebec’s Côte-Nord region is recovering despite high rate of COVID-19 transmission: health officials

The Côte-Nord region of Quebec has the highest rate of COVID-19 transmission in the province, but health officials in the area 500 kilometers north of Quebec City say the situation is improving.

There are 500 cases per 100,000 people in the Northern region, which has a population of about 90,000. Across the province, there are 171 active cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Health authorities on Tuesday said there were 47 COVID-19 patients at hospitals in the area, down six patients from the previous week. They reported three more deaths from the new coronavirus, which occurred within the previous seven days.

Marlène Joseph-Blais, a spokeswoman for the local health authority, said on Tuesday that despite the high rate of transmission – compared with previous waves of the virus – the situation remains under control.

“We are seeing a downward trend in cases and hospitalizations over the past three weeks,” Joseph-Blais said in an interview.

Officials reported 448 active cases in the region on Tuesday, down about 100 from the previous week. Joseph-Blais said the high rate of transmission can be partly explained by the fact that many Indigenous communities live in the area and they are part of high-risk groups that still have access to PCR testing.

Most Quebeer patients can only be diagnosed through rapid home tests, and those results do not count toward the province’s official case count.
