Vladimir Putin’s regime “mirrors fascism” of the Nazis, Britain’s defense secretary will say, while the Russian leader attends Victory Day celebrations in Moscow.

Mr Wallace will use a major speech to say that Putin and his inner circle should share the same fate as the Nazis, who were defeated in the end and faced the Nuremberg trials for their atrocities.

Today is Victory Day in Russia, a day of patriotic celebrations marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in 1945.

In Moscow, Mr Putin will watch the parade of soldiers and military hardware in the city’s Red Square before addressing the nation.

According to excerpts of a speech shared with the Telegraph and Times, Mr Wallace will say: “By invading Ukraine, Putin, his inner circle and his generals are now mirroring the fascism and tyranny of 70 years ago and repeating the mistakes totalitarian regimes of the last century.’

He will add: “Your destiny must surely be the same as well.”

Russia’s past casualties should not be forgotten, “but neither should the lessons of what awaits the perpetrators of such unprovoked brutality.”

Victory Day has taken on new meaning during Putin’s tenure, with expectations that this year’s events will be an even more passionate display of patriotism than previous years.

Mr Wallace is expected to say that the presence of generals in Moscow is particularly inappropriate because it allows the Kremlin to draw false parallels between the unprovoked attack on democratic Ukraine and the anti-fascist struggle of World War II.

“By going to such extremes to justify this war of choice, he and his generals are now tearing apart both Russia’s past and future,” Mr. Wallace will say.

“Their unprovoked and unlawful invasion of Ukraine, their attacks on innocent citizens and their homes, and widespread atrocities – including deliberately against women and children – corrupt the memory of past victims and the once proud reputation of Russia.”

The defense minister’s speech at the National Army Museum in London will also directly criticize the behavior of Russian commanders.

The generals in their “neat parade uniforms” are “absolutely complicit in Putin’s kidnapping of the proud history of their ancestors” of resistance against fascism.

“All professional soldiers should be appalled at the behavior of the Russian army,” Mr. Wallace will say.

“Not only are they involved in an illegal invasion and war crimes, but their top brass have failed their own base to the point that they should be court-martialed.”

He will say that enlisted men in the Russian army “will not have a voice and their mothers and sisters will be silenced.”

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is now in its tenth week, with millions fleeing Ukraine and thousands killed and injured.

The United Nations Office for Human Rights (OHCHR) has registered 6,802 civilian casualties in Ukraine, including 3,309 dead and 3,493 injured.

More than 230 of those killed are said to have been children.
