Vladimir Putin has granted Russian citizenship to NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Snowden, 39, fled the US and was granted asylum there Russia after leaking secret files in 2013.

The filings revealed extensive domestic and international surveillance operations conducted by the US National Security Agency, where he worked as a contractor.

US authorities have been demanding for years that Snowden return to the US to face trial for espionage.

According to the Associated Press, the Russian president signed a decree granting citizenship to 75 foreigners.
