What went wrong? Vanderpump Rules Stars Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz announced their split after more than 10 years together, leaving fans wondering why they called it over.
“After 12 years of adventures through life together, Tom and I are ending our marriage,” Maloney wrote in a statement shared to Instagram in March, after she was spotted without her wedding ring earlier in the month. “This ending is not met with resentment or hostility, there are no sides to choose from. We have deep admiration for each other that will always remain, and we cherish our friendship. Even though we may be on different paths, we will continue to love each other and support each other’s happiness.”
For his part, Schwartz expressed his disappointment in an Instagram post. “Well, that sucks,” he admitted. “How am I supposed to capture 12 years of love in an Instagram caption from the Aff family. Which image should I use? Is there a script to break up?”
After noting that he wasn’t ready to use the term divorce just because it was “too painful,” the reality star gushed about his romance with Maloney. “We’ve had some of the happiest, most romantic and funniest times on a human scale [sic] possible over the course of our relationship,” he enthused. “I am speaking of heavenly joy on the earth plane. She taught me so much about love and being a better partner.”
He added: “I don’t see it as a failure. As sad as I am, I am still happy to say that there is no anger or bitterness. Zero. Still so much love to you @musickillskate. And your family. I don’t think we were ever a model couple. Maybe we are model divorces.”
Schwartz and Maloney were dating back then Vanderpump Rules premiered in 2013. They married in 2016 but later revealed they weren’t legally married. The duo made it official when they tied the knot for the second time in July 2019 in Las Vegas.
A month before the split hit the headlines, the TomTom co-owner opened up about the couple’s plans to start a family. “Time will tell,” he said exclusively Us weekly in February. “I do not know [when].”
Schwartz seemed optimistic at the time, however, predicting that one day Maloney would make an “incredible mother.” “I love kids. We just never got around to it,” he added. “It’s not too late, I know.”
The host of the You’ll Love Me podcast, meanwhile, got honest about her marriage a year before the split.
“I feel like the misconceptions of our relationship are that this is how we are, Tom is deeply unhappy and I’m a miserable shrew of a woman,” she said during a February 2021 episode of her podcast. “I mean, we don’t hide our struggles. We have, as you saw on the show, quite intense, horrible fights that suck. But we’ve always been willing and able to live our relationship out loud. So you’re seeing the worst of the worst, but that’s not the daily constant for us.
