Prosecutors plan to indict a teenager accused of shooting dead two Miami-Dade students as an adult

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Florida. – A 16-year-old accused of shooting dead two students waiting for a school bus in northwest Miami-Dade appeared in court on Friday morning, where prosecutors said they plan to indict him as an adult.

Emmanuel Morales faces charges including attempted murder after police said he shot dead two 12-year-old students while they were waiting for their school bus around 8 a.m. Thursday morning near Northwest 109th Street and 10th Avenue.

Miami-Dade Police Detective Argemis Colome said the two victims were approached by a 16-year-old who demanded their cellphones. When they said no, he immediately started shooting at them, authorities said.

“These are two teenagers – two 12-year-olds. It could be our kids who are going to school right now. That’s the last thing on parents’ mind — about their 12-year-olds being shot while they’re waiting to go to school,” Colome said.

One victim was hit in the thigh and ankle, police said. The other was hit in the thigh and hand.

A witness, Ricrido Gaspard, spoke to Local 10 News and described the chaotic scene.

“I saw a kid get shot in the leg,” Gaspard said. “He said, ‘I’m in so much pain. I can’t hold it anymore.’”

Police locked down a nearby school and allowed officers to search for Morales, who was later found hiding in a nearby shed, officials said.

Detectives released photos showing the weapons they found, including two handguns and a rifle, all three of which were reported stolen.

In court, the teenager’s mother told the judge her son had had problems before.

“The court system failed my son,” Morales’ mother said. “I asked for help about my son being incompetent and unstable and I asked for help and nobody offered me help. It’s sad that it has come to this.”
