Priti Patel speech ruined as protesters stage ambush to blow up ‘racist’ Rwanda programme

Refugee protesters interrupt Priti Patel's speech

The young left are railing against the interior minister’s refugee program

A dinner for Tory activists Priti Patel as the star speaker was derailed this weekend after activists infiltrated the event.

As the Home Secretary began her speech, eight protesters seated around a table called on her to drop her plans to bring asylum seekers awaiting resettlement in the UK to Rwanda.

As they got up one by one and waited for the last one to be dragged out by security forces, each activist’s intentions were only revealed to staff in turn, adding several minutes to the interruption.

In footage of the stunt, a young protester could be heard shouting: “As young people who want to live in a fair and compassionate society, we are disgusted by your treatment of refugees.”

Guests at the dinner, hosted by the local Conservative Association in Bassetlaw, Nottinghamshire, could be heard trying to drown out their protest by chanting: “Out, out, out”.

Responsibility for the stunt was taken by Green New Deal Rising, a climate activist group that stylizes itself as emphasizing both “social justice” and green politics.

The group has described the Rwanda program as “cruel” and “morally bankrupt” and has repeatedly claimed it is causing deaths.

In a tweet accompanying footage of the event, the group said: “We are sick to see the government stepping up its hostile policies rather than helping those fleeing war, poverty and extreme weather.

“As climate change displaces entire communities and leaves people vulnerable to exploitation and violence, we must act with compassion.

“And as a country with a long history of exploiting people and resources, Britain must recognize its responsibilities.

“We call on the government to provide an accessible and decent system for people seeking refuge, drastically cut emissions and pay their dues!”

The scheme, which will cost the government at least £120million, will see asylum seekers arriving in the UK be taken to special facilities in Rwanda where they will be housed and fed.

It has been criticized by the United Nations Human Rights Organisation, refugee organizations and a number of MPs from across the political spectrum.

Boris Johnson said the program will ease pressure on Britain’s processing plants and help fight trafficking networks, while his allies accused critics of promoting “outdated” ideas about life in Rwanda.

Last month Ms Patel authored a joint article with Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta in which she: urged the critics to come up with a better plan.

The Danish government is also in talks with the Rwandan country over transferring some of its own asylum seekers to the East African country.
