Ms Patel, one of Mr Johnson’s most ardent supporters, joined them in Number 10 to tell the Prime Minister his position was untenable without the backing of Parliament Party, The Times reports.
Seventeen ministers and a number of ministerial assistants resigned as Mr Johnson’s authority waned in a dramatic 24 hours at Westminster.
