Makes a remarkable impression. Prince Harry opened about when he saw his now wife Megan Markle for the first time — and the story includes a Snapchat filter.
“I was scrolling through my feed and someone who was a friend had this video of them both, it was like a Snapchat,” Harry, 38, explained during the first episode of the couple’s Netflix docuseries. Harry & Meganwhich began streaming on Thursday, December 8th.
The Duke of Sussex recalled seeing the photo with a dog filter over it via his secret Instagram account, adding: “That was the first. I thought, ‘Who is that?’”
For her part, Meghan, 41, noted that she wasn’t looking for a relationship at the time. “I really wanted to be single and just have fun as a girl,” she told the cameras of meeting her new husband in the summer of 2016. “I had a career. i had my life I had my way… and then along came H. I mean, he was literally talking about a plot twist.”
After Harry reached out to their mutual friend to introduce themselves, Netflix shared the message they received. “Just between us, I thought you might want to know that you’re newly single and all. I put our snapchat on Instagram and Prince Haz follows me (he’s a friend), he called me last night to meet you. hehehe. Maybe I just need to set you up.”
During the premiere, the two shared the texts they sent each other before their first date.
“So come on – what are you doing tomorrow night? Hope you’re having fun over there!” Harry said in one of his messages, referring to Meghan’s visit to London for Wimbledon.
In response, Meghan wrote back: “Back to Soho. I’m having dinner at 8 tomorrow, but maybe I can have a drink tomorrow night. Does it work? Maybe 6?”
Harry responded to Meghan’s offer, saying: “You’re ON!”
News of Harry and Meghan’s romance broke in October 2016. The following year, the duo announced they were engaged in their first interview together.
“It was just an unbelievable surprise,” he said suits alum tells BBC News at the time about Harry’s proposal at Kensington Palace’s Nottingham Cottage. “It was just so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee. In fact, I could hardly allow it [him] propose ready. I thought, ‘Can I say ‘yes’ now?’”
In 2018, Harry and Meghan tied the knot at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, England. They added son Archie to their family in May 2019.
The two also made headlines in 2020 when they announced their plans to retire from their work roles in the royal family. A year later, they confirmed the decision was permanent, and they relocated to California ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic. Their daughter Lilibet was born in June 2021 of the same year.
While filming the documentaries, Harry spoke about how her life has changed since moving.
“It’s a great love story. And the craziest thing is I think this love story is just beginning,” he gushed. “She sacrificed everything she’s ever known, the freedom she had, to join me in my world, and pretty soon after that I’m sacrificing everything I know to join her in her world.”
