Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s family is growing again – and this time the new addition is a canine strain.

The couple adopted a beagle named Mamma Mia.

She was rescued by federal authorities in Virginia in July along with around 4,000 other beagles.

Mamma Mia – or Mia for short – came to the Beagle Freedom Project with a litter of eight puppies.

But after Meghan met her, she reportedly told the shelter staff: “No, we don’t want a Christmas puppy. … We want those we can help who are older.”

The seven-year-old rescue dog is joined by fellow beagle Guy and a black Lab believed to be named Pula at their family home in Montecito, California.

She must also learn to fit in with the couple’s two children, Archie and Lilbet.

The Los Angeles Times reported the couple made an after-hours visit to meet the rescue beagles.

Shannon Keith, an animal rights lawyer who runs the centre, told the newspaper: “The Duchess called me personally.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have adopted a beagle among 4,000 rescued from abuse at a breeding and research facility. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are the proud new owners of Momma Mia, who was stuck in overcrowded and filthy conditions at the Envigo plant in Virginia just two months ago before US federal authorities came to the rescue. In a fairytale transformation from rags to riches, the seven-year-old dog can look forward to a glamorous new life as Harry and Meghan roam the sprawling seven-acre Montecito estate. Mama Mia had arrived at the Beagle Freedom Project in LA's Valley Village neighborhood with eight of her newborn puppies. She had lived a miserable life at the Envigo factory, described by the Justice Department as a house of horrors where beagles were euthanized or left to die by employees. Shannon Keith, an animal rights attorney who leads the Beagle Freedom Project, told the LA Times that Meghan called her directly to express her interest in adopting a beagle. She said: The Duchess called me personally. She calls my cell phone with no caller ID and says, Hey Shannon, this is Meghan. We talked for 30 minutes and I was like, is that Megan Fox? Shannon only discovered the mystery VIP's identity when the Duchess and Prince Harry made an unobtrusive after-hours visit to see the dogs. Photos were not allowed and the couple were escorted by two security guards, Shannon told the Los Angeles Times. They played with Mia in the backyard of the house that serves as the base for the Beagle Freedom Project, but didn't want a puppy. Shannon, whose nonprofit rescues beagles and other dogs as well as cats, pigs, horses, rabbits, goats and sheep, said: The Duchess held Mia and said we're re-adopting her. She said no, we don't want a Christmas puppy and we want older ones that we can help. Harry and Meghan's rep confirmed the visit to the LA Times, telling the newspaper Megan has had a rescued beagle for years and wants to help one of the older, more vulnerable dogs after seeing news about Envigo. Envigo is the second largest manufacturer of medical research dogs, breeding approximately 25% of the beagles used in medical and drug research in the US. Ms Keith said they talked for 30 minutes and she wondered if it was Megan Fox but it was actually the Duchess of Sussex.

Animal lover Meghan has adopted a number of rescue dogs in recent years and brought her American rescue beagle, Guy, to the UK when she married Harry.

The former actress chose animal rights group Mayhew as one of her first patrons.

When she moved to England to live with Harry, she had to leave Bogart – a Labrador German Shepherd mix – in the USA.

Meghan has previously said that her dogs mean “the absolute world” to her, referring to them as “my loves” and “my boys”.

Guy and Bogart were regulars on their Instagram account, with Guy even appearing in a patriotic Union flag knit sweater.

Meghan often used the hashtag #adoptdontshop in her Instagram posts.

The Queen is the queen best known for her love for dogs.

In her engagement interview in 2017, Harry revealed that the Queen’s corgis and dorgis adopted Meghan “immediately”.

He said, “And the corgis took to you straight away.

“I’ve spent the last 33 years getting barked at; This one comes in, absolutely nothing…’

Describing the moment, Meghan said: “Just laying on my feet during tea was very sweet.”

And Harry added: ‘…just wagging tails and I was just like argh.’
