Prince Andrew has been “lobbiing” to stop Charles from becoming king, insiders claim

The British royal family has never been short of drama, and new stories keep popping up. One is that Prince Andrew, the Queen’s second son, attempted to oust then-Prince Charles from the throne in the 1990s after Charles and Princess Diana divorced. That telegraph recently released an excerpt from the new book Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall: From outcast to Queen consortdetailing Andrew’s alleged conspiracy and the real reason he “lobged hard” for the Queen to stop Charles from becoming king.

Angela Levin reports that Queen Elizabeth had asked Prince Andrew for advice because Charles had married Camilla, his former lover, with whom he was publicly dating in 1999, according to a “senior insider”. “Andrew tried to persuade the Queen to stop Charles from marrying Camilla by being quietly toxic, mean, unhelpful and very mean to Camilla,” said this person. He argued that Camilla was “insufficiently aristocratic” and not trustworthy.

This insider said that “when Diana was alive, through her friendship with Andrew’s wife Sarah, [Duchess of York] She plotted with Andrew to push Prince Charles aside so that Prince Andrew could become regent to Prince William, who was then a teenager.” A regent is the person appointed to rule a kingdom because the monarch for some reason cannot govern – in this case, William was a minor.

One possible reason: the two brothers had a difficult relationship; Before Prince William was born, Charles’ younger brother, Andrew, was the “surrogate” son in the line of succession.

“Andrew pushed very hard for it, hoping that Charles wouldn’t become king if his mother died and that William would wear the crown,” the insider said. “His behavior was very, very negative and extremely uncomfortable for Queen [Elizabeth], who disagreed. I’m told that was one of the rare occasions when he didn’t get his way. “

The insider said Andrew was “apparently very angry that he can’t rule the country in any way.” His animosity towards Camilla continued and “it is doubtful he was ever forgiven”.

That agrees a recent report that King Charles is considering a plan to depose Prince Andrew as “Counselor of State” who could represent Charles on official visits when the King is unavailable or prevented. Of course, the history between the brothers isn’t the only reason – in May 2020, Andrew was forced to step down from royal duties when he became embroiled in the financier Jeffrey Epstein scandal. In January 2022, Queen Elizabeth officially revoked his patronage and honorary military titles.

Her residence is the 31 bedroom Royal Lodge on the Windsor estate. Andrew has one Lease 75 years on the property owned by the Crown; If the royal real estate portfolio is revalued, he could be asked to leave.
