Prince Andrew ‘determined to fight for return to royal spotlight’

It has been reported that Prince Andrew is planning a “fight” into public life.

Days before the Queen’s death in September, the Duke of York was “in tears” when Charles told him as Prince of Wales he would never return to royal duties.

But the king now has new hopes for his future after Virginia Giuffre dropped a sex abuse case against American lawyer Alan Dershowitz last week.

The American-Australian anti-sex trafficking activist accused Andrew of raping her when she was just 17.

She claimed to have been “borrowed for sexual purposes” by recently convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell.

The Duke has always vigorously denied the allegations, but he has reached an out-of-court settlement for an undisclosed sum to avoid a trial.

Ms Giuffre also claimed that the former Harvard Law School professor was among the men Epstein forced her to have sex with.

Paul Tweed, a media and libel lawyer, said her “extraordinary” admission that she “may have made a mistake” in accusing Mr Dershowitz of abusing her as a teenager raised questions.

When asked if the development could help Andrew salvage his reputation, he told The Telegraph: “I wouldn’t slam all the doors just yet.

“The battle has shifted from the court to the court of public opinion, but I don’t think anything is insurmountable.”

A source also told Mail Online last night: “Everything has changed and Andrew is determined to fight.”

Reports are coming in of his planned fight to return after spending a day filming with Princess Anne, Prince Edward and other members of the royal family.

The Duke is expected to be invited to Sandringham for Christmas.

But a source said his career was not the new king’s top priority as he has “a very busy tray”.

A source said: “Senior palace aides have previously said the Duke of York would be supported by family to forge a new life away from the public eye.”
