Prezzo is expected to close 46 restaurants and put 810 jobs at risk after battling rising food and energy costs.

The Italian restaurant group announced the closure after it said its utility bills more than doubled as food prices rise at the highest rate in 45 years.

The chain is also struggling with the impact of Covid – with customer numbers below pre-pandemic levels – and the “changing face of the high street”.

Prezzo said it will try to “relocate as many employees internally as possible” that will be laid off from the loss-making locations.

After the restructuring, there will be a total of 97 restaurants and around 2,000 employees, who will see more restaurants in busier shopping malls such as retail parks or tourist hotspots where footfall is higher.

Prezzo Chief Executive Dean Challenger said: “The last three years have been some of the toughest times I’ve seen for the High Street and I am very proud of, like our colleagues, Prezzo’s position as a more attractive, more trustworthy, value-for-money eatery – and beverage experience.

“But the reality is that the cost of living crisis, the changing face of High Street and rising inflation have made it impossible for all of our restaurants to operate profitably.”

The price of spaghetti is up 40%, while pizza sauce is up 28% and the cost of dumplings is up 15%.

Mr. Challenger added, “We believe the difficult decisions we make today will ensure Prezzo can serve communities with quality, accessible, Italian-inspired food for many years to come.”
