Preston: Toddler and pensioner killed after Porsche and Vauxhall crash on motorway

A three-year-old and an elderly man died yesterday when a Porsche Boxster collided with a Vauxhall on a motorway.

It is believed the Porsche driven by the 79-year-old man collided with a Vauxhall Meriva the young girl was driving in on the M6 ​​near Preston in Lancashire.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the accident around 5.50pm between J29 (Preston) and J28 (Leyland).

The accident forced the freeway to close in both directions for several hours, with some southbound closures remaining in place this morning to repair the road surface.

The Vauxhall rolled over on its side before catching fire, seriously injuring two adults in the vehicle.

Sgt Craig Booth of Lancashire Police said: “These are very sad and tragic circumstances.

“This was a traumatic scene for all witnesses and emergency services involved. I would like to express my gratitude for their efforts in dealing with an incident that can only be described as horrific.

“We want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or who had dashcam footage of the area at the time it happened.”

A statement from National Highways last night read: “The M6 ​​in Lancashire is closed between J29 (Preston) and J28 (Leyland) southbound due to a serious collision involving a car which was left on its side and caught fire . In addition, lanes 2 and 3 are closed on the northbound lane within J28.

“All emergency services, including Lancashire Police, are present. National Highways Traffic Officers also provide on-site traffic control assistance.

“All traffic within the closure has now been cleared. The closure will probably remain in place for several hours for police investigations and clean-up work.’
