(CNN) – President Joe Biden has tested negative for Covid-19 but will remain isolated pending a second test, his doctor said in a letter on Saturday.
“The President remains very comfortable,” wrote Dr. Kevin O’Connor. “Given his rebound positivity, which we reported last Saturday, we have continued daily monitoring. This morning his SARS-CoV-2 antigen test was negative. Prudently, the President will continue his strict isolation measures pending a second negative test as previously outlined.”
Biden has not left the White House for 17 days after initially testing positive for Covid-19 on July 21. After a five-day regimen of Pfizer’s antiviral drug Paxlovid, Biden tested positive for a rebound case of Covid-19 last Saturday and has resumed isolation. There are currently no events on his public schedule for the weekend.
During the isolation, the President has virtually attended public events at the White House residence. On two occasions, he held socially distanced remarks about a restricted pool from the Blue Room balcony, announced a successful strike that killed al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri on Monday, and on Friday signed two bills on the Combating the Covid-19 aid fraud.
President and First Lady Jill Biden are scheduled to travel to Kentucky on Monday after deadly floods in the eastern part of the state killed dozens and devastated the area.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Individuals with recurrence of COVID-19 symptoms or a new positive virus test after testing negative should resume isolation and re-isolate for at least 5 days.”
During Biden’s first battle with the disease, he experienced mild symptoms, including a runny nose, fatigue, high temperature and cough, according to his doctor. Paxlovid’s five-day course, which the President completed, requires a doctor’s prescription and is available through an emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of mild to moderate Covid-19 in people 12 and older at risk of serious illness .
The CDC issued a health alert to doctors on May 24, advising that Covid-19 symptoms sometimes come back, and that’s exactly how the infection can develop in some people, whether they’re vaccinated or on medication how to treat Paxlovid. The CDC said most rebound cases involve mild illness and that there have been no reports of serious illness.
Biden is fully vaccinated and received two booster shots. He received his first two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine before his inauguration in January 2021, his first booster in September and his second booster in March.
