(CNN) — President Joe Biden meets with the Prince of Wales in Boston on Friday and welcomes him to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum before attending a Democratic fundraiser.
“Nice to see you again!” said Biden when he met the prince in front of the library.
The Prince and Princess of Wales are in Boston for the second annual Earthshot awards ceremony, an ambitious initiative founded by Prince William to help tackle some of the planet’s most pressing environmental issues, scheduled for Friday. The heir to the British throne was inspired by Kennedy’s “Moonshot” speech to launch the project in 1962, when he commissioned the United States to advance space exploration.
Biden was last at the Boston library in September, where he made comments about his administration’s cancer moonshot program.
“We expect they will discuss their shared climate goals, prioritizing mental health issues and reducing the burden of disease,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said aboard Air Force One en route to Boston before the meeting.
The Bidens have met with the British royals on several occasions, including most recently at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London last September.
The royals’ three-day visit to Boston marks their first trip to the United States since they visited New York in 2014. A few months after their 2011 wedding, the couple also embarked on a whirlwind California tour.
The couple’s trip was seen by some as an opportunity to reframe perceptions in the US after a few destructive years. New seasons of Netflix show The Crown have revived old criticisms of the monarchy, while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey tarnished the family’s reputation, particularly over allegations of racism.
But as the couple flew into town, controversy erupted at home after an adviser resigned after making “unacceptable and deeply regrettable” comments to a black executive visiting Buckingham Palace earlier this week.
In Boston, Biden is said to later participate in a telephone bank with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
The president told reporters Friday that while he is in Boston, he will support Georgia Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock’s runoff campaign by raising funds for the Democratic campaign committee. A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS shows Warnock has a slim lead over Republican challenger Herschel Walker among those likely to vote in Tuesday’s runoff.
CNN previously reported that Biden traveled to Massachusetts on Friday to lead a fundraiser for the Georgia Senate runoff. The President will appear at the event with Elizabeth Warren and Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey.
