Popping balloons ensure active shooter fear on the campus of Barry University

MIAMI SHORE, Florida. – There was a scare on the campus of Barry University on Thursday after reports of an armed and active gunman.

A series of loud bangs triggered pure panic, which luckily turned out to be a false alarm.

Cellphone video shows people hiding in a campus library while officers armed with long guns were called in to escort students to safety.

The incident drew a large contingent of officers from the Miami Shores Police Department and the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Local 10 News has learned the noises came from Thompson Hall, where an event was taking place, and the university said the noise was just balloon bursting.

Witnesses say people ran away and even left campus not knowing what to think.

Text alerts and emails did go out, but some students felt staff were even surprised by the chaos.

“We were just wide open in the dining room with the doors open and everything, we just felt like there wasn’t a sense of urgency, everyone was just kind of confused,” said student Ivanie Mercado.

Student Nathan Beresnitzky added, “We saw a bunch of people kind of dispersing and we had one of the staff take us to the corner up there and we’re basically just waiting for them and everyone was like, ‘Shut the doors locked, make sure no one leaves this area.’ It was a very upsetting situation.”

Police spent about two hours on campus, but the all-clear was finally given.

There are no reports of injuries.

A spokesman for the school said there was never a shooter or attacker and there was no threat to the campus.
