Vatican City: Former Pope Benedict, who became the first pope to resign in 600 years in 2013, has died at the age of 95.
Former Pope Benedict died at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery in the Vatican on Saturday, a spokesman for the Holy See said.
“It is with sadness that I inform you that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. died today at 9.34 a.m. in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. More information will be made available as soon as possible,” the spokesman said in a written statement.
On Thursday (AEDT), Pope Francis announced that Benedict was “very ill” and asked the faithful to pray for him. The Vatican did not provide any information about his condition.
According to Italian news reports, he had been suffering from breathing problems over the Christmas period.
Up until a few weeks ago, those who had seen the retired pope said his body was very frail but his mind was still sharp.
Benedict, the first German Pope in 1000 years, was elected on April 19, 2005 to succeed the widely popular Pope John Paul II, who reigned for 27 years.
Cardinals had chosen Benedict from among them in search of continuity and what has been called “a safe pair of hands.”
