Authorities in northwest Utah shot and killed a man at a Ballard motel early Friday after the man opened fire on an officer, law enforcement said.

Representatives from the Uintah County Sherif’s office were dispatched to the Ballard motel around 3:30 a.m. Friday following reports of a fight, officials said in a news release. Bureau of Indian Affairs police officers assisted the deputies.

According to the press release, responding law enforcement found a man in the motel room where the disturbance was reported.

The man pulled out a firearm and fired at least one round at authorities – hitting a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer in his ballistic vest. The officers returned fire and hit the man several times.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Bureau of Indian Affairs officer was treated at a local hospital and later released, authorities said.

No further details about the shooting or the man’s identity were released as of Friday afternoon.
