Police release an image of the object that killed the driver on I-64

FLORISSANT. MON – Police are trying to figure out how a piece of metal broke through a woman’s windshield on Interstate 64 on Tuesday, killing her.
Investigators released a photo of the piece of metal that struck the victim’s vehicle.
Mark Arciszewski of the Metropolitan Glass Company in Florissant said he saw everything.
“If someone’s carrying something and it flies off the truck, it hits the ground and the next thing you know it’s being shot around,” he said.
Arciszewski said he has been repairing cracked and broken windshields due to debris for years. When he heard the news that a woman had been killed by road debris, he said he wasn’t shocked.
“Not surprised, but it’s a shame,” he said.
“If someone is driving on the freeway, say at even 65-70 mph, and if something is thrown up off a tire, that can come at the same speed. You have an impact of about 140 mph.”
Arciszewski said when you drive, the best form of safety is to be aware of your surroundings.
“They are all the same. You just have to be careful where you drive. A lot of times I just tell people to stay away from the fast lane because there’s a lot of debris hanging in the direction of the fast lane,” he said.
The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department is conducting the investigation.
