Police are hunting a man who allegedly assaulted a mother pushing a stroller in Mitcham

Police say a mother who was pushing her child’s stroller through a busy park in Mitcham was traumatized after she was sexually assaulted twice by a man who asked for a selfie together, then forcefully kissed her and then in broad daylight pursued.

Police allege the man approached the woman at Halliday Park, Mitcham Road, around 4.30pm on Friday 6 January. The woman claims he asked for a photo of himself and then a selfie together before he started kissing her. He then pursued her through the park before allegedly attacking her a second time.

The woman managed to snap a picture of the man the police wanted to speak to.

“The young mother managed to get away from him, but he then followed her about 200 meters, ran towards her again, grabbed her again and started kissing her again,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Rachele Ciavarella.

The woman was able to free herself after the second attack and sound the alarm. It is believed that the alleged perpetrator headed north when he walked away.

“At that point she contacted … her partner to get her. She felt extremely insecure. She felt his behavior might escalate,” Ciavarella said.

Police fear the man has a history of delinquency and may commit a criminal offense again.

“I don’t think it’s the first time he’s been offended. His actions were pretty confident and he did it twice too,” she said. “We want to identify him before that happens again.”

Detectives have released a picture of a man taken by the victim and are urging the public to come forward with any leads.
