CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee police said six people were injured in a shootout in a downtown Chattanooga business district.
At least one person of interest was arrested shortly after Saturday night’s shooting, police spokesman Jeremy Eames said in a news release on Sunday. The statement does not say whether anyone has been charged.
Officers patrolling the area heard gunshots and saw several people firing guns and scores of people fleeing the area. Officials began providing assistance to the victims and helping others to get to safety. Several gunshot victims were taken to a hospital and two of the injuries were life-threatening, Eames said.
The ages of the victims were not immediately disclosed, but most were believed to be teenagers and young adults. Eames said there were large groups of youth walking downtown, “and we believe the shooting took place within that group.”
Eames said it believes not all of the victims were intended targets in the shooting.
The area, dotted with residential buildings, has restaurants and shops within walking distance and is popular with tourists.
