Police: 16-year-old Chelsea student arrested after bringing loaded gun to school – Boston News, Weather, Sports

CHELSEA, MASS. (WHDH) – A 16-year-old student is in custody after officers said he brought a gun into his Chelsea charter school hours before the graduation ceremony.

A Phoenix Charter School administrator noticed the loaded 9mm gun on the student’s waist and was able to take it from him without incident, according to a post on the Chelsea Police Chief’s Twitter page.

“We were able to contain the incident, the staff handled it really well,” Principal Beth Anderson said. “Chelsea Police have given us the best assurance they can that they have no reason to believe that this school or any other location in Chelsea is at greater risk of harm.”

The student was taken into police custody around 2:30 p.m., Chief Brian Kyes said. Now investigators are working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to track down the origins of the weapon. Police say the gun is unregistered in Massachusetts and has not been reported stolen.

School was able to continue as normal and no lockdown was imposed. A search was conducted to ensure the safety of the students.

This follows a recent spate of mass shootings that have rocked the nation.

“In light of recent national events, the school recently reviewed its safety policies and procedures to ensure we have strong security measures in place to provide a safe environment for our students,” Phoenix Charter School officials said in a statement.

So far it is unclear why the student brought the gun to school in the first place.
