Plane carrying Royals had to make an emergency landing and return to the UK en route to Gibraltar

A FLIGHT carrying Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex on their controversial voyage to Gibraltar was forced to make an emergency landing after technical problems.

The royal couple flew to Gibraltar from the UK when the plane had to fly back to the capital.

The Earl and Countess were due to get there today to walk down Main Street from the Monastery to the Town Hall at 4pm.

This has now been delayed after problems with the flight.

A statement from the Office of the Governor of Gibraltar read: “The arrival of the Earl and Countess of Wessex in Gibraltar has been slightly delayed after their flight was safely diverted back to the UK due to a technical problem.

“Alternative arrangements will be made for the arrival of HRH in Gibraltar later today and the program will be adjusted accordingly.”

The Spanish government has protested the visit of the Wessex to Gibraltar.

Madrid still claims the territory as part of Spain and its future border arrangements are currently the subject of talks between Britain and the European Union.

Spanish diplomatic sources said the country’s foreign ministry “expressed its unease” at the visit.

Spain considers this “inappropriate” against the background of ongoing negotiations for Gibraltar’s post-Brexit relationship with The Rock.

A BA spokesman said: “Our pilots have decided to return to Heathrow as a precautionary measure due to a minor technical issue and the aircraft has landed normally.

“The problem has now been resolved and the plane is scheduled to take off again shortly.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding.”

It comes after the Queen was caught up in mid-air drama last week when lightning forced her jet to abort landing.

The 13-seater eventually landed in London after leaving Aberdeen.

A 4×4 then took them to Windsor Castle to prepare for the Platinum Jubilee.

A thunderstorm, rain and hail meant Her Majesty’s jet had to return to the sky seconds before landing.

Her pilot made a second and successful attempt when the weather cleared and she was taken to Windsor Castle by 4WD with her Corgi in the back seat.
