“Pixar’s ‘Turning Red’ evokes nostalgia for the 13-year-old’s frenzied hobbies

In the three days since Pixars To redden arrived on Disney+, there was a noticeable discrepancy between the film’s critical response and its viewer rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Right now the critic rating is 95% while the audience rating is 71%, up from 66% on Saturday. That’s a much larger gap than the last Pixar films Encanto and Luke.

Sometimes that kind of gap simply means there are disagreements between critics and mainstream audiences. But if you look at the Rotten Tomatoes comments To redden, it becomes clear that this divide is more politicized. Some viewers were disgusted by the film’s portrayal of a 13-year-old girl who is having her first period and has a crush on boys. Others did not so veiled complaints about the film being too “progressive” or “woke”.

Instead of displaying a range of star ratings from one to five, To reddenThe audience reviews of ‘s Rotten Tomatoes are unusually polarized. And the people who gave To redden a star or less mostly share similar criticisms: That the film somehow “glorifies disobedience‘, or that it is unsuitable for children because it deals with the subject of puberty. These comments often reflect a very conservative attitude, using words like “sinful,” “filthy,” and “obscene” to describe a PG-rated Disney/Pixar cartoon.

Those responses went viral on Twitter over the weekend, sparking conversation about the film’s relationship potential. It’s clear that some people were very uncomfortable with this Rotate(an opinion that often had sexist and racist undertones), while others saw it as a sympathetic celebration of 13-year life.

The word “cringe” comes up a lot in discussions To redden. Everyone finds puberty embarrassing, and the way people process that embarrassment has a huge impact on how they react to this film.

In the negative comments, there is a recurring sense of disapproval and disgust towards Mei (the film’s protagonist) for getting her period and having crushes on boys. Meanwhile, the people who love To redden show a more nostalgic and loving look of adolescence – particularly the “cringey” behavior that others found too embarrassing to enjoy.

Mei draws fanart about her crush and is obsessed with the fictional boy band 4*Town. Her perspective is partly inspired by the experiences of writer/director Domee Shi and obviously relatable to many viewers. While those one-star Rotten Tomatoes commenters were complaining about it To redden contains inappropriate content for a PG-rated film, others were quick to argue that it was an entertaining, authentic portrayal of early teenage life.

Like the misogynist backlash against it Captain Marvel 2019 — an issue that prompted Rotten Tomatoes to reconfigure its rating system — roots this polarized reaction in prejudice. There’s nothing wrong with hating a popular movie, though To reddenThe loudest haters of . don’t really argue that the film is “bad”. They’re particularly angry about a Disney film that acknowledges the existence of puberty and explores that story from the perspective of a Chinese-Canadian girl.
