The singer and the soccer pro welcomed their eldest son Milan in January this year, followed by Sasha in January 2015.
The Grammy winner opened up about the difficulties of being a working mom in September 2019. “Sometimes it’s very hard when you can’t see your sons for a month or even more,” the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer said life magazine back then. “It’s so hard. But we’re on FaceTime on the phone, so we’re in constant communication, which helps.”
The Colombian native went on to describe her and the athlete’s parenting style, explaining, “We don’t have a written contract to share the duties or anything like that, but we’re both very involved in parenting and trying to make the best of it we can.” We support each other and find great help in our families. We don’t know any other way!”
The couple started dating in 2011 and always wanted to have children. In March 2014 the former Voice judge tells latina Magazine that she wanted her “own fútbol team” with Piqué.
“If it weren’t for my music projects, I’d be pregnant by now,” Shakira said at the time. “I would like to have eight or nine children with Gerard.”
Becoming a mother helped the songwriter “learn how to focus,” she added, noting that having kids also changed her relationship with her fans.
“When you have a baby, when you feel his love, you feel so at peace with the world. You just want to share the good news and share how lucky you are feeling,” Shakira said. “I have so many people out there celebrating with me when they know I’m happy. And they hate it when they know I’m suffering because someone hurt me. In a way I feel supported and guided through life in a very strange way. You express so much love for Milan, so much affection. I can only hope that as he gets older he learns to give that love back to all the people who give him so much every day.”
Shakira and the professional athlete announced their split after 12 years together.
“We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the sake of our children, who are our top priority, we ask that you respect their privacy,” the exes wrote in a joint statement in June 2022.
