Pictures and sounds of the St. Louis Cardinals spring training

ST. LOUIS – We’re almost halfway through spring training. The first full week of March gives the St. Louis Cardinals a chance to scrutinize young talent as many regulars compete in the World Baseball Classic.

It’s a little fewer than usual numerically, but no surprise to Cardinals manager Oli Marmol.

“We knew what we were getting into,” Marmol said before the WBC departures. “We’re going to give young people a chance to keep getting innings and at-bats.”

Gameplay and beyond, the Cardinals have been working with dozens of players and prospects in anticipation of the 2023 season. Below are some of the sights and sounds of the past few days.

Willie McGee’s work with outfielders

The three-time Gold Glove winner has worked closely with newly switched outfielders Juan Yepez and Jordan Walker along with Dylan Carlson on line drives, pop flys and groundball routines.

Arenado’s cousin coaching

While Nolan Arenado looks in tip-top shape for the World Baseball Classic, he’s not the only one in his family chain to represent the Cardinals. His cousin Luis has taken on new leadership roles with batting practice and will serve with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals this season.

Tink with it in top form

One of the best prospects for the St. Louis Cardinals has back-to-back scoreless games to earn an exhibition win on Thursday. A tough game and some field practice on Friday shows he’s made progress in his field too.

Brendan Donovan keeps raking

In just nine spring games, Brendan Donovan has hit four homers, just one fewer than his total from his rookie MLB season. The utility infielder is scoring with a .333/.385/.833 stat line this spring.

Perspectives taking up work

A nightcap on Friday will give the St. Louis Cardinals minor league camp a chance to look around. Outfielders Won-Bin Cho and Moises Gomez have struggled through batting practice on many occasions by clearing balls or sending to the fences.
