A man has been found dead in a white van believed to be linked to the shooter who shot dead ten people in Los Angeles, it has been reported.

Officials have been chasing the gunman after the horrific shooting took place after a festival for Chinese New Year in California on Saturday night.

A series of photos shows a SWAT team and police officers surrounding the white van in a parking lot in Torrance, near LA, before engaging in a standoff.

After police entered the van, the situation appeared to de-escalate, with officers lowering their guns and then retreating from the area immediately surrounding the vehicle.

Just a few minutes later, police entered another white van parked nearby and it was reported by Sky News that a body was found slumped in the van.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the body is that of the suspect.

The SWAT operation on the first white van searched in Torrance, about 30 miles from Monterey Park, was completed around 11pm GMT.

The LA County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau said on Twitter, “Neighborhood safe.”

Police previously released a photo of the alleged suspect wearing a black leather jacket, black knitted hat and glasses.

The alleged suspect was identified as a 5ft 10in tall, dark complexioned Asian male weighing 150lbs.

He has been described by authorities as a murder suspect, but police are withholding his name.

Footage previously posted to social media showed deserted, cordoned-off streets in Monterey Park, about seven miles from downtown Los Angeles, after a man opened fire with a “machine gun.”

Gunshots were first heard after 10 p.m. local time near the site of a Chinese New Year party.
