Photographer dies after being hit by runaway motorbike at British Motocross Championships

Tributes have been paid to a photographer killed by a runaway motorbike at the British Motocross Championships.

Simon Mitchell, who was in his 50s, was hit on Sunday after a rider fell off his bike during a jump at Foxhill motocross venue in Swindon, Wiltshire.

The bike rolled off the track and also crashed into a 60-year-old race director, who was seriously injured.

His sister, Nikki Dancey, said in a tribute: “My family and I are deeply saddened to share the terrible news that our brother, son and uncle tragically lost his life in a freak accident at the Foxhill Motocross event in Swindon yesterday Life came to the best efforts of paramedics and rescue plane doctors.

“We are absolutely devastated. ‘Rest in peace Simon Mitchell.’

Friends and colleagues described him as “incredibly talented” and a “really lovely guy”.

The site’s team said in a statement: “The entire team at VMXdN Foxhill is deeply saddened by the passing of Simon Mitchell.” [on Sunday afternoon] after an unusual accident at the side of the track.

“Simon has been a brilliant photographer, huge motocross enthusiast and incredible supporter of VMXdN Foxhill from day one.

“Simon has worked closely with the VMXdN team for many years in our various roles in the motocross industry.

“Over the years he has captured many memories that will be remembered forever.” Many of Simon’s photos are featured on our social pages and website.

“His photo was the original image behind last year’s Mike Brown merch t-shirt, which he was incredibly proud of.”

“Simon was a really nice guy who always had time and wanted to help others.”

The weekend event, which drew 10,000 people, was abandoned shortly after the accident at around 2.50pm towards the end of the premier class race.

A spokesman said it was “very rare” for a non-rider to be killed during a motocross event, adding that the two were in a separate area not intended for spectators.

Wiltshire Police confirmed officers have been called to the scene and a post mortem is scheduled to take place on Simon’s body.

An inquest is also opened and adjourned by the Wiltshire Coroner.

Foxhill is considered one of the best motocross tracks in the UK, with a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) road known for its challenging terrain and hills.
