Pevely man accused of assaulting ex-girlfriend and shooting at police

HILLSBORO, Mo. — The Jefferson County Attorney’s Office has charged a Pevely man in connection with a domestic violence case that led to a brief shooting and a standoff with local law enforcement.

According to Grant Bissell, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened on Nov. 18 at the 700 block of Old State Road South.

The victim contacted Pevely Police to report that she had been assaulted by her roommate and former boyfriend, Jason Phillips. She told authorities that Phillips became furious after learning he would be asked to move out of the residence.

The victim told police she and Phillips got into an argument that culminated in him slapping her in the face, choking her and then threatening to kill her.

Bissell said the victim fled the home with her daughter.

Three uniformed Pevely officers went to the house and confronted Phillips at the residence. Police claim Phillips still has the shotgun in his possession.

Officers ordered Phillips to drop the gun and he initially complied. However, Phillips did not respond to additional orders. Bissell said police used pepper spray on Phillips.

Phillips, police claim, picked up his shotgun and turned to officers.

An officer fired a shot at Phillips, Bissell said. Phillips then fired a shot in the direction of officers, who then retreated from the home to call for assistance. No one was injured in the exchange.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team responded to the home and arrested Phillips without further incident.

Phillips was charged with two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of armed crime and second-degree domestic assault. He is being held without bond in the Jefferson County Jail.
