People have feelings about Arrested Development being taken off Netflix

arrested development was one of Netflix’s early Original TV Success Stories: A cult comedy that was canceled after three years found a second life after Netflix revived it and did two additional seasons. But arrested developmentThe long-running tenure on the streaming platform is nearing an end after plans for the series’ exit from Netflix surfaced, a move angering both show fans and people worried about streaming originals being dropped from the platforms be removed on which they were made.

news that arrested development Leaving Netflix on March 15 was first reported earlier this week, and if you check arrested development On Netflix, a banner will appear on the landing page indicating the last day you can watch the series. The removal not only affects the first three seasons, which aired on Fox, but also seasons 4 and 5, which Netflix produced with Imagine Entertainment and 20th Century Fox Television (now known as 20th Television). The first three seasons of arrested development also stream on Hulu, which Disney owns (and also owns 20th Television).

Streamers are constantly adding and removing tracks they don’t own due to licensing agreements. But the proposed removal of arrested development Seasons 4 and 5 encounter a rare (although not unheard of) situation that is becoming increasingly common: the removal of seasons of television that made it.

Netflix’s Marvel Projects and several other original titles have historically disappeared from its platform, sometimes reappearing elsewhere; The Marvel Shows are now on Disney+. But the removal is notable in part because it paved the way for Netflix as a streamer, creating its own programming (it was one of the first shows Netflix did) and its role as one of the earlier TV revivals before it became commonplace.

“‘It’s five seasons, Michael. What might it cost to maintain the streaming rights?’” @hipstermermaid askedRiffing on one of the show’s most famous jokes.

The bigger concern is for the final two seasons, which are Netflix Originals but aren’t directly owned by Netflix. While Fox seasons had a physical release for a time and Netflix released a physical DVD for Season 4, Season 5 did not. If the Netflix seasons aren’t available on Hulu (or wherever the series may end up), viewers won’t be able to legally watch the show’s fifth season. While people have mixed feelings about the Netflix seasons – Season 4 had mixed reception while Season 5 was largely panned by critics – they are aware of the pitfalls that come with TV shows no longer being available to everyone.

The move follows a recent trend from Warner Bros. Discovery and Showtime, which have removed several original streaming titles from their platform. In some cases, these shows don’t have physical releases, so when they’re gone, they’re gone.

It is possible that arrested development could stay on Netflix; as some reports have pointed out, something similar happened Lilienhammer, a Netflix Original that will leave Netflix before a last-minute deal is struck. But if that’s not supposed to be the case, you only have a few weeks left to watch the series in full.
