Penn State landmark vandalized on closing weekend – NBC10 Philadelphia

An investigation is underway at the state college after Penn State University landmarks were vandalized over seniors weekend, the school said.

The university says the Nittany Lion Shrine, Old Main and the Hintz Family Alumni Center were defaced with red paint sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

According to PSU officials, vandals pried off an eye from the iconic Nittany Lion statue and spattered it with red paint. The grounds were fenced off and unavailable for graduation photos while university police conducted investigations.

“Kind of Sad” Christy Parker said the subsidiary WJAC in her hat and dress. “It’s a tradition. So all the graduates come over and take their pictures. And there were a bunch of people down here.”

Red paint was also used for graffiti in Old Main and the Hintz Family Alumni Center.

NBC10 Partners WGAL reports big red letters reading “TIME IS UP” could be seen on Old Main’s front door, and blue words reading “DEATH BY COP,” “DEATH BY HAZING,” “DEATH BY SUICIDE,” and “DEATH BY PSU CULTURE” covered others Entrances from the historic building.

The entrance to the Hintz Family Alumni Center was covered in red letters that read “FTG,” according to WGAL, and a note was also written that read, “Should have been listening when you had the chance.” The note was replaced by “ADG “ signed.

“These are deeply disturbing acts at a time when many families are taking photos and celebrating the academic achievements of their graduates.” Penn State University said in a statement.

The vandalism in Old Main was cleaned up as of Sunday noon, but it’s not yet known when repairs to the Lion Shrine will be complete, WJAC reports.
