A man has been jailed for two years and banned from working for the police after he was found to have hundreds of sick pictures and videos of children.

Former PCSO James Land had filmed children as young as three changing at a swimming pool in Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

A court heard how he also hid a teenage girl’s underwear under his bed.

Land, who was previously part of a team of specialists fighting online crime for Derbyshire Police, was arrested by his own colleague.

He was caught accessing some of the images on a work laptop in May 2021.

Officers searched the 43-year-old’s home in Cromford in the Peak District and seized nine pieces of equipment, including a personal laptop, mobile phone and external hard drive.

They contained over 1,500 objectionable images and videos of children – 369 of them in the most severe category A.

Over a 19-year period, Land had also downloaded photos of children as young as two who were being abused.

Land pleaded guilty to three counts of taking indecent images, one of possession of extreme images, six of voyeurism and one of possession of prohibited images of children.

Land, now in Abergele, Conwy, Wales, was jailed at Derby Crown Court on Tuesday and subjected to a ten-year sexual harms prevention order.

Judge Nirmal Shant QC said: “They were clearly targeting very young children aged three to five, it was a swimming pool.

“It caused a lot of grief to their families.

“You were always employed by Derbyshire Constabulary as a PCSO – in 2017 you were given a role in cybercrime.

“You have provided safety notices regarding online safety and with that in mind, you accept that you were in possession of inappropriate images from 2002 to 2021.”

Country with 369 category A abuse images, 262 category B images, and 686 category C images.

He resigned from the force in April after being suspended early in the police investigation.

After the case, Deputy Chief Constable Kate Meynell said: “There is no place in Derbyshire Police for someone committing crimes as serious as this.

“We, like the communities we serve, are shocked and disgusted by Land’s actions.

“He was arrested and suspended at the earliest opportunity and the gross misconduct trial will continue after the criminal case has been concluded.

“We will try to put him on the ban list, which will prevent him from working for other police forces and in other specific professions.”
