Paul Scholes has called Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta a ‘disgrace’ Arsenal’s 3-1 triumph over Manchester United on Saturday.

After beating Chelsea on Wednesday, Arsenal picked up their second significant win in three days as they beat United in the Emirates thanks to goals from Nuno Tavares, Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka.

However, the game was marred by a series of VAR incidents, not the least of which was Arsenal’s penalty for the second goal, which was awarded after Alex Telles collided with Saka in the box.

Arteta was seen putting pressure on referee Craig Pawson

When umpire Craig Pawson went to the touchline to review the incident, Arteta protested to the official and urged the home fans to put pressure on Pawson.

Scholes, the former United midfielder, believes the Spaniard’s actions were out of order.

He said: “I think Arteta is a disgrace there. He’s not allowed to.

“If you watch it again he actually goes into the crowd to try and influence the referee a little bit. All players around them as well. That shouldn’t be allowed.’

Saka’s conversion from the penalty spot proved crucial as it ensured the north London side went into the break in the lead after Cristiano Ronaldo pulled back a goal just before half-time.

It means Saka has now scored two penalties in his last two games, with the 20-year-old scoring from the spot at Stamford Bridge in midweek.

While back-to-back defeats at Liverpool and Arsenal have all but dashed the Red Devils’ Champions League hopes, back-to-back wins have put the Gunners back on course for a top-four finish after three straight league defeats.

After Saturday’s game, Arteta said how pleased he was with his team’s reaction, but urged them to remain on an equal footing.

He said: “I worry even if I win, so imagine that. But that’s the game and we have to focus on what we’re doing and what we want to do and not be too down or too excited after the win.
