Patrick Viira criticized Chelsea’s decision to stop Conor Gallagher from playing for Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semi-final.
The 22-year-old joined Palace for a season from Chelsea last summer and has been one of the star players under Vieira this season.
Palace meet Chelsea in next Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, but Gallagher will be forced to watch the game from the stands after Chelsea rejected Palace’s special request to allow the midfielder to score against his parent club to play.
And Vieira believes not letting Gallagher play in the FA Cup semi-finals will only hamper the midfielder’s development.
“It’s not the best rule because the only one who’s going to lose is Conor,” Vieira said.
“There’s a semi-final, it’s a really exciting game about how you manage yourself and prepare to play that game, then there’s that type of game and the importance of that.
“It’s an experience that the player lacks and I’m disappointed in him. He’s played all the games so far and if there’s anyone who deserves to be in the semifinals it’s him because of his performances so I’m disappointed he can’t play.
“The decision for Chelsea, loaning him out means playing these kinds of games. We have an opportunity as a group to play an important game and that game would have given him more confidence and confidence.
“We could lose but being on the field is what he needs to continue to develop.
“Since he’s been with us he’s been fantastic and for him it’s frustrating for his development not to have a chance to get involved in this game. I feel for him because he wanted to play this game, any player would want to play this game.
