Passionate about ‘crime’: Whitman cops help couple’s unforgettable marriage proposal – Boston News, Weather, Sports

WHITMAN, MASS. (WHDH) — Police in Whitman responded to a special call this month: Help a man propose an unforgettable marriage with a prank so good it looks almost criminal.

Officers were asked by a friend of the department to assist a man, Wayne Morse, in his proposal to then-girlfriend Kristen Fleming. After he explained his plan, police were on board and were admitted to assist by Chief Timothy Hanlon, according to a Facebook post from the department.

With plans to propose on Friday, September 9, Morse and Fleming went to The Patio at McGuiggan’s for dinner with Fleming’s parents. It was around 6pm when two officers and a sergeant also showed up at the restaurant.

Fleming later said she joked at the table about Morse being arrested when she saw the police arrive.

“I said [to my family] “Wayne, what have you done? They’re coming for you,’” Fleming described. “And then they go up and have a picture of him!”

According to the department, Morse had previously sent them a picture of himself and his clothes to avoid any case of mix-up.

Police then showed up to arrest Morse, who “refused” before officers handcuffed him and took him to a squad car. Fleming asked to speak to her fiancé-to-be and went to the vehicle to find out what was going on when police let Morse out to get on his knee and ask the question.

The gag was a success: he received a “Yes!” from his new fiancée.

“I was just horrified — I was ready to kill him,” Fleming joked. “He’s so lucky it ended up like this because I was so angry.”

In her Facebook post, the police department said it was grateful to have participated in the unique proposal. They also noted that this was a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”

“Please don’t flood our answering machines with all sorts of crazy requests,” the post reads. “To Wayne & Kristen: The Whitman Police Department wishes you much love, health and happiness in your future. Congratulations!”
