A tawny owl was rescued by Bradford firefighters after it was found hanging upside down from an overhead telephone line.

The poor animal – nicknamed Tony – woke locals to screams of agony last week.

Ronnie Goldwater, of the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said it was “tied to the telephone line with an identity strap”.

He said: “It was a sad sight when I got there. It was in distress and the neighbors told me it had been there for a few hours and calling the fire department was the last chance to get it down.

“When it came down, the bird shut itself off – I had never seen anything like it.

“I think it was the stress and being out in the rain for hours, but it wasn’t pretty to look at.”

After the bird was rescued, a volunteer – identified as animal rehabilitation volunteer Vikki Clarke – took it to a veterinarian.

The veterinarian, a falconer, cared for the animal until it could be safely released into the forest near the rescue site.

A fire service spokesman said: “The owl was rescued safely by the team and a volunteer who kindly took the owl to a local vet.

“Luckily the owl wasn’t hurt, but was a bit weak. Thank you to the team and volunteers at the incident.’

It’s not the first animal rescue to make headlines because of unusual circumstances.
