Outlander fans were over the moon to welcome Claire (Caitriona Balfe), Jamie (Sam Heughan) and the Fraser-MacKenzie crew back to Season 6 on Sunday after a two-year droughtlander with no new episodes.

However, some were a bit unsure about darker storylines set up during the season’s feature-length opening episode, namely regarding time-travelling nurse-turned-doctor Claire.

The Starz series began with a lengthy look back at Jamie’s time in Ardsmuir Prison 20 years earlier in 1753, to forge his relationship with new settlers at Fraser’s Ridge, led by the pious and cold Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones).

However, it’s not just the turbulent arrival of the Christie family and the approach of the American Revolutionary War that will cause “tension” and “disruption” to our favorite settlers, as teased by stars Richard Rankin and Sophie Skelton – it’s The Big House itself trouble is brewing.

During the episode, Claire is shown experimenting with an early form of anesthetic, triumphing in replicating ether as a gas that she hopes to be able to use on patients in the future, rather than having to rely on laudanum or whiskey.

With Jamie remaining somewhat concerned about its power after having trouble waking Claire up early from a test attempt, she is shown turning to the substance later in the episode while struggling to sleep.

This is directly related to the PTSD she developed following her ordeal at the end of Season 5 at the hands of Lionel Brown and his men, who kidnapped, assaulted, and raped her for practicing modern medicine.

Following the sixth season premiere, fans flocked to share their first thoughts online about the development, which is not a storyline from Diana Gabaldon’s books.

A poster on Reddit commented, “Not sure what I think about Claire using ether. She needs to know that this can cause brain damage on a regular basis. We’ll see how it develops.’

“Cool so Claire is on drugs now,” wrote another, to which a viewer replied, “I was sad too! But given what happened to her, I can understand why she chooses this path to escape her trauma.

‘I’m not saying this is the method, but we can see that Claire clearly needs help but doesn’t want to ask for it!!’

“It will be interesting to see how this affair between Jamie and Claire develops!” they added.

Another shared: “Dang Claire go easy on the ether.”

As a viewer reflected on the “quiet Sam.” [Heughan] “heavy” episode with multiple plot points, including the Christies, the brewing war, and problems with Indian agents, they asked, “Does that mean he ends up distracted and missing what Claire is up to?”

However, not all fans were immediately concerned, with one posting: “I wasn’t expecting Claire’s drug abuse storyline but it’s perfect and I hope they do well.”

With Fergus (César Domboy) also struggling with the effects of alcohol and distancing himself from his pregnant wife Marsali (Lauren Lyle), will drug abuse be a major theme for the final season?

Outlander season six episode one is avaAvailable to watch on STARZPLAY now, more episodes will be released on Sundays.
