A man was shot dead by Orem police on Sunday night after he allegedly stabbed his father and threatened officers.
According to Orem police, officers were called to “domestic violence” at an apartment near 50 East and 1100 South shortly before 11 p.m. A caller reported a 41-year-old man had assaulted someone. his 68-year-old father with a knife, causing a wound in the neck area. The man then ran away, the caller said.
Officers said they located the suspect a short time later, a short distance away. According to police, the man was “non-compliant” when they tried to arrest him. He “assaulted the officers,” with unidentified weapons in both hands, according to a news release from the Orem Police Department, and at least one of the officers opened fire on him.
Although the suspect received medical attention, the statement said he died at the scene. Police did not say how many times the officer opened fire. The 68-year-old victim was taken to the hospital; His condition was not available on Monday night. The names of the suspect and victim have yet to be released.
A call for additional information from police on Monday night was not immediately returned.
The shooting is being investigated by the Utah County Serious Incident Officials Team. According to Orem police, the officers involved were all wearing body cameras, and other information “could be released at a later date.”
This is the 29th police shooting this year in Utah. The record is 30 mass shootings in a year, achieved in both 2020 and 2018.
